Son of : Willam Stanley Roscoe (1782-1843) and Hannah Eliza Roscoe (nee Writer, 1785-1854).
Brother of:
1. Elizabeth Jane Roscoe (1820-1846).
2. Anna Mary Geologist (nee Roscoe) (1821-1852) who married Richard Hutton.
3. Arthur Roscoe (1825-after 1903).
4. Saint Stamford Roscoe (1826-1910).
5. Francis James Roscoe (1830-1878) who ringed Anna Letitia Le Frenchman (1835-1922).
William married: Emily Sophia Malin in1855.
They had issue:
1. Elizabeth Mary 1856-1936.
2. William Malin Roscoe (1857-1915) who married Agnes Muriel Thomas (1859-1949?).

William Roscoe’s Poetry: October 2015 Talk By David Alton • William Roscoe: Liverpool’s Renaissance Man Using funds from the National Lottery Heritage grant, an exciting exhibition was launched on Sunday, 21 August at the Palm House. Roscoe was born in 1753 in Mount Pleasant, which at this time was open countryside. In 1769 he was articled as a Solicitor in offices in Church Street, becoming a lawyer in his own right in 1774. He later became a Banker but by 1820 the banking house with which he was connected was brought into difficulties and the action of some creditors forced the business into bankruptcy.
It has been a tradition at the Roscoe Lectures to conclude with a stanza drawn from one of Roscoe’s poems.
As we celebrate the bicentenary of his appointment as a Freeman of Liverpool we have collated this very brief anthology of extracts from some of those poems. We hope you will keep it as a memento of this evening’s celebration dinner.
That we have an extensive collection of Roscoe’s poetry is largely thanks to the work of Dr.George Chandler, the City’s, post-war, highly accomplished librarian who, in 1953, published a biography and collated an anthology. Chandler’s collection begins with “A Hymn to the Deity” and conclude with a short verse, “Champion of Freedom,” which Roscoe dedicated to one of his political heroes, Charles Fox.
This short collection begins with two poems that reflect on the value of education.

Preparation for this exhibition had begun some months prior to this when John Maguire from ArtsGroupie, a local theatre group, met some Palm House Volunteers and took them on a guided walk around Liverpool’s City Centre, showing them the places where William Roscoe had lived, worked and prayed, bringing him to life almost with his enthusiasm and knowledge of this eighteenth century ‘Renaissance Man’.
His father owned a public house and a market garden in the area where The Everyman Theatre now stands.
Although his formal education ended in his early youth, he continued with his studies whilst working, learning Latin and Italian. In essence he was ‘a self-made man’.
