Rie Muñoz, the well-known Alaskan artist, died on April 6, 2015. Although she’s gone, her experiences are not lost, from her first memories in Holland and assisting with the Allies’ WWII efforts, to journeying to the Last Frontier and blossoming into the beloved artist so many Alaskans have come to know. During the last five years of her life, Muñoz penned “Rie’s Memoirs” to relive all her old adventures and keep her memories sharp. Her son, Juan Muñoz, decided to share his mother’s memoir with the Empire so the public could read about her rich life experiences. Local artist continues family legacy ahead of upcoming art show: The granddaughter of the late local artist Rie Muñoz is set to host her first art show sharing her same gallery
The sun shone through the open door of the Rie Muñoz Gallery as the soft sound of music and pitter patter of dogs walking around played in the background of Mercedes Muñoz’s potter’s wheel. She sits in the studio portion of the her late grandmother’s namesake building, surrounded by finished and unfinished ceramic pieces, paintings and other knickknacks that brings a sense that the studio has been well used and well loved — which it has.
