Deborah Warner, (1959- ), leading British theatre director, best known for her artistic partnership with the Irish actress Fiona Shaw. Warner is unusual among British theatre directors in that she did not come from a theatrical family and did not go to university. She trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, before forming Kick Theatre Company in 1980, directing them in The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertolt Brecht; The Tempest, Measure for Measure, King Lear, and Coriolanus by Shakespeare; and Woyzeck by Georg Büchner. She also directed the first Bengali-speaking production of The Tempest for the British Council in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 1987 she directed an award-winning production of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), with Brian Cox in the title role. Between 1987 and 1989 she was one of the RSC’s resident directors.
